a ) Problem

Hong Kong being a large city is subject to the "concrete jungle" syndrome.

Highway structures present in Hong Kong therefore presented the following problems:-

• Attack by graffiti artists
• Concrete breakdown / attack (due to Hong Kong's proximity to the sea there is a large risk of saline (salt) breakdown, acid rain and UV attack on concrete structures experienced here).
• Acted as an eyesore due to their "mundane appearance" and pickup of dirt.

The problem therefore was how protect highway structures from concrete attack as well as beautiful the environment for Hong Kong residents and visitors.

b) Solution

Hop Shing Engineering & Construction Limited raised and discussed with the Hong Kong Highways Department, the issue of beautifying the environment and protecting their structures.

The solution offered was a cost effective solvent based flexible acrylic coating - this answered all of the issues seen in the "problems" section above, from a technical point of view as well as the beautification issue (due to various colour options being available).

Various colours were trialed in different locations to assess the performance of the coating from a protective and decorative point of view - the results from these trials were that the applications solved the problem and "beige cream" and "light gray" colours were chosen.

Additionally a proposal that tests the application and performance specifications was recommended and implemented to ensure that the result is as expected.

Since the initial introduction of this solution, the response from Hong Kong citizens has been very, very good.
This has led to the continuation and expansion of the number of structures receiving the coating solution which Hop Shing specified and has applied throughout Hong Kong.

Additionally other Clients in Hong Kong with bridges and structures saw the advantages of the system and now are also applying the same solution to the structures under their control - overall an outstanding success!!!
